The research by Dr Nina Pierpoint, a New York paediatrician, is a very long way from demonstrating anything of scientific significance, let alone proving ill-effects. It is based on a small sample of families and little can be drawn from it as yet. But many well-attested hazards – including lead in petrol and human BSE – came to light in just such a way, through one individual doggedly raising a concern in flat contradiction of prevailing scientific opinion. Yes they can damage health and will continue to do so to more people if the Government does not stop energy companies from agreeing with land owners to do so within close proximity of people's homes.
